UAVs and GIS for agriculture

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in agriculture allows to study vast agricultural areas, where estimation by the other methods is time-consuming and is expensive. Remote sensing allows to receive actual information on the status of agricultural land, seasonable regulation of the agricultural processes and predict the germination and yield of crops.

The UAV system modification «DELTA-M Agro» for these purposes is equipped with two types of optical-electronic sensors:

  • Digital Camera
  • Multispectral Sensor

The output data of aerial photography with digital camera are represented in a form of orthomosaic in a chosen coordinate reference system. The photographic images are used in compilation of digital maps and therefore inventory and certification of land, measuring lengths and areas of agricultural facilities, assessing the effectiveness of the use of land.

Unlike the use of photographic images, using the spectrometric techniques allows to obtain values of intensity of the reflected electromagnetic radiation in certain spectral ranges. For agriculture, the use of multi-spectral sensors allows to calculate vegetation indices which values describe the state of a biomass.

The most common vegetation index NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) is calculated to evaluate the productivity of agricultural land, crop yield forecasting, determination of the degree of plant pests destruction. Multi-spectral data allow to analyze the chemical composition of soil, its moisture, salinity, metal contents, identification of areas with a lack of or excess fertilizers and pesticides.

Processing the digital images and the spectral data give the hybrid models and thematic maps. Further integration with geographic information systems allows to organize the database that contains information on the progress of field work, cultivated crops, used fertilizers and pesticides, as well as the effects of drought and fires.

The combination of spatial data and time, allow to provide the statistical analysis of the impact of various factors on the productivity of the agricultural sector and its economic viability.

The accumulation of information for a long period would help effectively allocate human resources and work planning for the next field season.
